The city of Rethymnon, located in the middle of Crete, is one of the most beautiful cities on the island and perhaps in Greece! It is the capital of the prefecture also called Rethymnon, a region famous for its stunning natural beauty with many gorges, caves, beautiful stretches of golden sandy beaches and many picturesque villages.

The island and of course her major cities, have been invaded by many nations over the centuries due to its prime strategic location in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The Venetians and Ottoman Turks who ruled over the island for centuries have arguably had the most influence on the island; in Rethymnon city this is very visible in the architecture, food, art and music.

Although Rethymnon is not a big city, there is much to discover and the best way to do this is on foot! The most well known part is the old town, with its small Venetian harbour fringed with fresh fish tavernas and cafes, beautiful Venetian and Turkish mansions, the Fortezza, churches and mosques and many tiny hidden alleys that attract thousands of visitors every year. On the outskirts of the old town you find the public garden and impressive ruins of factories and other hidden monuments. At the new harbour you find fishermen selling their freshly caught fish and the paleontological museum of Rethymnon is housed in an old renovated mosque.

Rethymnon, besides its beauty, is a lively town were many events are organized throughout the year. The city attracts people from all Western and Middle Crete for work, studies, business, shopping and entertainment.

Where to stay?

In the city of Rethymnon there are many hotels and apartments. You find big hotels but also many beautiful small hotels of which many of them are in beautifully restored old Venetian mansions.

Of course many visitors stay in along the boulevard close to the beach but still at walking distance of the city centre. In this area there are many hotels and appartments.
